Deep Dive: AI & campaigning masterclass – using artificial intelligence effectively and ethically

AI & campaigning – using artificial intelligence effectively and  ethically.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how information is created, shared, and understood. For campaigners, this brings huge opportunities, and equally big questions. How can AI help you move faster? What are the risks? And how do you use these tools in a way that strengthens your strategy, protects your communities, and stays rooted in your values?

This practical, campaign-focused Deep Dive is an AI & campaigning masterclass designed to help you cut through the hype.

Whether you’re cautiously curious or already experimenting, we’ll show you what AI can (and can’t) do in campaigning, and how to use it in ways that genuinely support changemaking.

Why should I join an AI & campaigning masterclass?

SMK’s research shows that campaigners want to use AI effectively and ethically, but many feel unsure where to start, concerned about the ethics or worried about getting it wrong. This masterclass is built for just that – practical, hands-on, and grounded in the values of social justice and responsible power.

What will this Deep Dive on AI & campaigning cover?

Over 3 hours, this masterclass will focus on using Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude through a campaigning lens, with a wider look at AI’s risks and ethical use.

Expect a balance of teaching, live demos, and hands-on practice in breakout rooms.

You will:

  • Build a clear understanding of what AI is and isn’t, with a focus on how Large Language Models actually work
  • Learn how campaigners can use LLMs for research, policy, communications, and strategy
  • Practise well-structured, practical LLM prompts to live campaigning scenarios
  • Understand the risks, ethics and limitations of AI in campaigning, including environmental, social and political costs and what to do about them
  • Leave with a simple set of guardrails for responsible AI
