SMK’s Campaign Carousel introduced me to tools such as the spectrum of allies and the power mapping grid. I use these brainstorming activities regularly to help me see the bigger picture and plan a strategy for my campaigns.
I took part in SMK’s Campaign Carousel shortly after starting my role as Campaigns Officer at Unlock Democracy. Unlock Democracy is a not-for-profit organisation which campaigns for a better democracy protected by a written constitution.
I particularly enjoyed the module on Influencing in Parliament and Central Government. The module offered valuable advice because it was delivered by experts including a former advisor to 10 Downing Street, a former senior civil servant, and a parliamentary researcher. Learning about the legislative process has helped me campaign against damaging bills such as Conservative MP Dominic Raab’s ‘Bill of Rights Bill‘ (a misnomer!).
The workshop leaders offered great advice on written communication. We discussed how to write in a way that will energise your base, persuade the persuadable, and alienate the opposition. This has helped me in my everyday work and is a skill that everyone could benefit from.
