SMK is thrilled to announce the appointment of <\/span>Pete Moorey as SMK\u2019s new Chair and Kimberly Garande <\/span>as Vice Chair.<\/p>\n This is a vital time for civil society in the UK to be working at its best, unleashing its’ \u2018social power\u2019. This means SMK has an important job to do – helping champion the reforming role of the sector; deepen understanding of change and pool experiences; and build capacity and confidence. Pete and Kimberly will bring much-needed skills, guidance and experience to help us tackle this challenge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Pete Moorey<\/span><\/b> is Head of Campaigns and UK Advocacy at Christian Aid and before this was Head of Digital Impact & Sustainability Campaigns at BT, responsible for BT\u2019s Skills for Tomorrow campaign, which aims to help 10 million people to make the most of life in the digital world. <\/span>Before joining BT, Pete was Director of Advocacy and Public Affairs at Which?, where he ran the consumer champion\u2019s campaigns, securing changes to laws, regulation and consumer behaviour in the financial services, utilities, transport and retail markets. Pete was previously the Head of Public Affairs at the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Head of Campaigns & Communications at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m really excited and proud to become Chair of the Sheila McKechnie Foundation after over 4 years on the Board. SMK\u2019s vision of a more confident and powerful civil society in which people work together to drive social change resonates deeply with me and is something I am committed to in and outside of the work I do at SMK. This is a challenging time, when the power of civil society campaigning is more needed than ever to make change happen. I\u2019m looking forward to working with SMK as it plays a critical role in supporting changemakers to be the change they want to see in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Kimberly Garande<\/span><\/b> is currently Youth Development Lead at We Belong, a migrant youth-led organisation, campaigning for the rights of young migrants, developing young leaders by providing advice, support and training. Kimberly joined We Belong in October 2019 and is dedicated to changing how society relates to marginalised groups. <\/span>Kimberly was born in Zimbabwe and migrated to the UK aged 9. She applied for student finance in 2015 and realised that her immigration status became the barrier to going to university because it meant she wasn\u2019t eligible for a student loan. In the same year, Kimberly attended a Leadership Academy, which provided support and importantly awareness that she was not alone. She recognises the importance of young people seeking out opportunities for further development and challenging societal constraints.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018<\/span>I am elated to be Vice Chair of SMK, as someone who didn\u2019t have any access to governance roles a few years ago and hardly saw herself represented in the sector. I hope this appointment serves as inspiration to both young people and organisations to see the\u00a0value of trusting and investing in youth leadership and our expertise. I look forward to continuing developing in this role; utilising my lived experience, campaigning and optimism in working alongside this dynamic board with genuine individuals who seek to contribute to a stronger, more conscious civil society.\u2019<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive, the Sheila McKechnie Foundation, said:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe are delighted to have Pete and Kimberly leading our Board, bringing fantastic experience, energy and ambition.
